Who has never looked in the mirror and felt an explosion of joy and well-being? This feeling of everything going right is linked to the release of positive hormones, triggered by satisfaction with one’s own image. Whether at home, in the salon or at the gym, high self-esteem directly influences your mood and perception of life. However, a global study reveals an interesting contrast: while the self-esteem of women between 30 and 44 years old decreased, in other age groups there was an increase. Young people between 18 and 29 years old showed an increase of 3 percentage points, going from 22% to 25% of those with high self-esteem. Among women over 45, the growth was even more significant, jumping from 33% to 46%.

In other words, feeling good about your own beauty brings happiness. This is what biomedical doctor Karine Maia, specialized in aesthetics and orthomolecular medicine, guarantees. “When we are in tune with our body, with our physical appearance, this generates the release of hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins. These substances promote pleasure, reward, satiety and even happiness. They encourage us to enjoy very positive sensations”, he explains.

It lists the functions of each one. Serotonin and endorphins, he says, offer well-being and a feeling of relaxation, while dopamine provides motivation and satisfaction. Oxytocin makes the individual more susceptible to social relationships, opening them up to new connections and a feeling of empathy towards other people. “When all of these hormones are together, they are able to significantly reduce stress and anxiety. But this only occurs with a balance between physical health and mental health”, points out the biomedical doctor.

For that, Karine Maia recommends investing in self-care and personal aesthetics, which includes regular physical activity and openness to relationships that help generate positive feelings. “Exercise, for example, releases endorphins and dopamine, and when practiced outdoors, it tends to increase well-being even further. Therefore, a walk in a pleasant place can also make a difference in the release of these hormones into the bloodstream”, he says.

As for interpersonal relationships, the professional says that being around people who are attractive to them due to their aesthetic beauty or emotional harmony can also release oxytocin. Pleasant environments, landscapes and details of nature that please the senses tend to be good for mental health. Therefore, she recommends the constant search for pleasant moments, even though she recognizes the difficulty of enjoying this type of sensation frequently.

“Of course, life is not just happiness, it’s not just achievements. We have our frustrations, our feelings of sadness and emotional fragility. But science already knows the organic step-by-step, so to speak, that leads to positive sensations. When we begin to understand the behavior of hormones, it becomes easier to achieve self-esteem and undermine the effects of suffering. The answer to all of this lies in hormones”, he concludes.
