**Courtney:** It all started during a arduous time. My dad was going through chemotherapy treatments, and after one session, he said something that really stuck with me.He said, “Courtney, you think I hung the moon, but I didn’t.”



A few days later, while watching a cardinal at my bird feeder, the spark for the story ignited.



My dad’s words and the image of the cardinal combined to create a powerful image in my mind. I wanted to capture that feeling of love and admiration for my father, while acknowledging that he’s a real person with his own struggles and complexities.





**Host:** The book tackles some tough topics like illness and grief, but it does so in a way that’s accessible and relatable for children. How did you approach this delicate balance?



**courtney:** It was definitely a challenge. I wanted to be honest about my own experiance, but I also wanted to create a story that offered hope and comfort.
