Chadwick Shane Mobley managed to flee twice.

Sanders County Sheriff

It’s a story with many twists and turns. In 2011, 20-year-old Andrea Eilber was found shot in the head at her parents’ home in Lapeer, Michigan. Suspicion will fall on her 19-year-old boyfriend, Kenneth Grondin. The latter was sentenced to life in prison in 2016, but in 2018 he appealed on a formality and was placed under house arrest pending a new trial.

The police had discovered a cigarette butt in the driveway of the house where the murder took place but had found no match, nor with Kenneth Grondin’s DNA, for that matter. So she thought the butt had nothing to do with it. The family of the accused has long requested a new analysis of the butt, the investigators ended up doing it in 2022, explains «The Detroit News».

A first leak

The search eventually led to a new suspect, Chadwick Shane Mobley, 42, who was therefore 30 at the time of the murder. Investigators traveled to his home in Utah in January to ask for his DNA. The man lived in his delivery truck. After being interrogated, this suspect fled and went on the run.

On June 28, he was arrested in Montana. Sunday, July 9, a private company took charge of extraditing him to Michigan. At a gas station in the town of Plains, he managed to get rid of his handcuffs and chains and fled. Local residents have been instructed to remove their keys and weapons from their vehicles, lock their homes and report any suspicious activity, says CBS. Monday evening, he was found and arrested, not far from the gas station.

“It’s a joke”

If the authorities congratulate themselves on their excellent work and the collaboration of the citizens, this whole affair horrifies the brother of the wrongly accused man: “They might have known that this guy was responsible for the murder 10 years ago, if they had retested the DNA as we had begged them to do. Then following the state police questioned Mobley, they let the guy get away, then they grabbed him and they let him go. It’s all a joke.”
