“Austro-Hungarian Summit”: Briefly with Orbán in Budapest

“Priority Strategic Partnership”

Erdogan’s visit to Budapest focused on Hungarian-Turkish relations. The two countries now want to take their “strategic partnership” to the next level, according to a report by the Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday. When Erdogan visits Hungary once more, an agreement should be signed that would establish a “priority strategic partnership” and offer mutual assistance in emergency situations. The visit will take place on December 18th.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized Turkey’s “essential role” in securing Hungary’s energy supply. A large part of the gas required by Hungary is imported via Turkey’s Turkish Stream pipeline. Turkey’s transit role will be further strengthened when a deal on Azerbaijani gas supplies to Hungary comes into effect and when Turkmenistan starts exporting energy to Europe, MTI writes.

Another official meeting took place on Sunday between Orbán, Erdogan, Vučić, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and the leaders of Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. According to Szijjártó, Serbia has promised to route Russian gas to Hungary through its own infrastructure should Ukraine stop transport through its territory, writes the French news agency AFP.

“No official talks”

Sebastian also traveled at the invitation of Hungary Kurz to Budapest. The starting point for the invitation was the international sporting event in the Hungarian capital, says the spokesman for Kurz upon request. Another item on the agenda of the ex-Chancellor’s trip, who was accused of making false statements in the Ibiza U Committee last Friday, were the celebrations for the Hungarian National Day. Every year they inspire with the largest fireworks display in Europe.

According to MTI, it came between Kurz and Orbán on talks on bilateral relations and Russia’s war of aggression once morest Ukraine. The spokesman adds that it is normal for politicians to discuss geopolitical issues. These were not official talks. Already on Monday would Kurz come back to Austria.

Viktor Orban reflected on the Austrian visit on Monday in a post on Instagram and Facebook. You can see a photo on which he and Sebastian Kurz shake hands in front of the Austrian and Hungarian national flags. The Prime Minister writes in Hungarian: “Austro-Hungarian summit. Agreement with Sebastian Kurz. Continuation of diplomatic cooperation.”

Thousands of believers also celebrated the Hungarian national holiday in memory of the founder of the medieval Christian Hungarian state, King Stephen I, on Sunday in Budapest. The Kathpress reports that President Katalin Novák and Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén also took part in the celebration on the square in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica.
