For Austria’s women-Team boss Irene Fuhrmann has improved the personnel situation before the start of the Nations League. Among the 24 players who were nominated for the duels with Norway and France on Friday are pillars such as Verena Hanshaw, Nicole Billa and Katharina Naschenweng, all of whom were recently absent. It is bitter that Julia Hickelsberger-Füller, Austria’s footballer of the year 2022, is injured once more.
The 24-year-old offensive player is currently completing a four-week recovery program due to a torn muscle bundle. It is known that right-back Laura Wienroither will be absent for a longer period of time because of her cruciate ligament tear. The trio Katharina Schiechtl, Claudia Wenger and Lisa Kolb, who were also injured recently, should be ready for a comeback. “The squad situation has definitely relaxed compared to July, we’re getting important personalities back. I’m therefore positive that we can get off to a good start,” said Fuhrmann at the squad announcement in Vienna.
The ÖFB squad will start the premiere of the new competition on September 22 in Oslo, four days later World Cup quarter-finalists France will be guests in the Generali Arena in Vienna. This game clearly surpassed the previous ÖFB women’s viewer record of 3,600 from 2012.
“We have exceeded the 5,000 spectator limit more than three weeks before the match. We are grateful and are already looking forward to it, but we see potential to get even higher,” said Bernhard Neuhold, Managing Director of ÖFB-Wirtschaftsbetriebe. He did not want to commit himself to an exact target number. A status of 5,000 on September 1st would have been gratefully accepted in the ÖFB in advance. They now want to approach the 10,000 mark. “If it succeeds, it’s a great success, but we don’t want to set any limits at the moment,” revealed Neuhold.
In any case, the Viola Park will not be a permanent home for the time being. The ÖFB women want to present themselves throughout Austria. On Friday it was announced that the second home game once morest Portugal will take place on October 27 (6 p.m.) in Altach. “We are confident that we can also create a decent backdrop there,” said Neuhold. Women’s football is very important in Vorarlberg, and two teams are represented in the Bundesliga: Altach/Vorderland and Lustenau/Dornbirn.
It is still unclear where Norway will be played on December 5th. There are talks, but no final announcement yet. “The next few weeks will be crucial,” said Neuhold. The new home of Blau-Weiss Linz is certainly one of those arenas that are up for discussion.
