Austria’s women lost 0:4: “That’s a decent game”

Austria’s women’s national football team underperformed at the end of the European Championship qualification and suffered a painful 0:4 (0:2) defeat in the local duel with Germany, which is acceptable even at this level. This meant that nothing worth counting came out of the fifth duel with the European vice-champions, for whom Klara Bühl (11th, 92nd), Jule Brand (39th) and Lea Schüller (53rd) scored.

At least the impression of an outstanding backdrop remains: 43,953 visitors gave Hannover a nearly sold-out house, which Germany’s midfield director Lea Oberdorf was not able to enjoy to the full. The 22-year-old from FC Bayern, who has already torn her cruciate ligaments twice in her career, was eliminated following an unfortunate tackle with Barbara Dunst. Her right knee is pretty damaged, which has national coach Horst Hrubesch worried as he looks ahead to the Olympic Games.

His opponent was also anything but happy: ÖFB team manager Irene Fuhrmann had expected more following the convincing performance in the 3:1 win once morest Poland. The red-white-red team only fired four shots in total, with one going at Ann-Katrin Berger’s goal, who demonstrated her footballing qualities with two assists from long shots. Austria might have defended that better. “That’s a tough game and not pleasant,” Dunst said angrily.

We have to look to the future. After missing out on a direct ticket for EURO 2025 in Switzerland, the draw is on Friday. Sarah Puntigam & Co. will face their first play-off opponent (from League C) on their second chance. It should not be the strong Slovenians.

“We are always very critical, there is a lot to work through. We will do everything we can to be as well prepared as possible in October,” stressed Fuhrmann.
