With a clear 6-0 win once morest Iceland, the ÖFB women’s youth team storms into the 2024 U20 World Cup in Colombia. It is the first World Cup finals participation for Austrian women’s football.

In Salou (SPA), team boss Hannes Spilka’s selection made a great start early on Monday. Vienna striker Nicole Ojukwu was spot-on twice and gave Austria a 2-0 lead (11th, 23rd). After Iceland’s Hjartadottir was shown a red card (43′), Ojukwu sank the free kick to make it 3-0 and complete her hat trick. In the long injury time of the first half, Isabel Aistleitner (also employed by Vienna) scored with a penalty kick to make it 4-0 (45th + 5th).

After the restart, the Austrians, with their numerical superiority, were largely able to limit themselves to managing their lead. Alisa Ziletkina, who was substituted shortly before, increased the score to 5-0 with a lob (70th) and to 6-0 with a goal (87th).

A loud red-white-red fan delegation that had traveled to the deciding game mightn’t stop cheering. The fans witnessed first-hand how domestic women’s football history was made. To date, no female ÖFB selection has ever made it to a World Cup finals.

The World Cup finals will take place in Colombia from the end of August 2024. The ÖFB team originally missed the ticket because they did not make it to the semi-finals at the U19 European Championships in Belgium in the summer. But FIFA subsequently decided to increase the field of participants. Europe received an additional place in addition to the qualified teams from Germany, Spain, France and the Netherlands, which was played between the two third-placed teams in the European Championship group, Iceland and Austria. Incidentally, St. Pölten’s top talent Valentina Mädl, the team’s best goalscorer, was missing from the play-off due to injury.

Salzburg is represented in the support staff of the successful team: the goalkeeping coach is Oliver Scheucher, who, among other things, once trained today’s teamkeeper Alexander Schlager at SV Grödig.
