Austria’s balance sheet remains deeply red – six clubs are in the red

The annual balance sheet at Wiener Austria is still deeply red. As the Bundesliga soccer team announced on Monday, the negative annual result in the past 2022/23 financial year amounted to 6.85 million euros. From a negative perspective, the favorites are number one in the league, but only one of six teams that recorded a loss. Series champions Red Bull Salzburg have no such problems and are still the “non plus ultra” with a plus of more than 32 million euros.

The Salzburgers were able to significantly increase their sales by more than 30 million euros to 186.82 million euros. This is more than four times higher than the closest rivals Sturm Graz (46.54 million) and Rapid (45.34 million). Austria follows immediately behind with 30.66 million euros, recording an increase of seven million euros. However, that was not enough to improve the financial situation. The club’s liabilities currently stand at 66.73 million euros. Compared to the previous year, the mountain of debt grew by almost two million euros.

“Austria’s financial situation is still very difficult, there is nothing to sugarcoat it. In addition to the high interest rates and depreciation on our infrastructure, the high energy costs and the overall economic situation also made it difficult to achieve a better result last season,” said the new CFO Harald Zagiczek in a club announcement. The club is working on concrete measures to improve the financial situation.

As Austria noted, the share of write-downs that do not affect liquidity amounts to around 4.8 million euros. The high interest rates are responsible for the remaining minus. The negative equity is now over 20 million euros (20,659), following it was reduced to 16.28 million euros in the 2021/22 financial year through the entry of a group of investors led by sports director Jürgen Werner.

Former CFO Gerhard Krisch had already noted a year ago that the financial turnaround would not be possible in 2022/23 due to the interest rate landscape. Austria only received the license for the current season at the second attempt, following investors and patrons had pumped money into the club once more. Zagiczek now emphasized that he continues to perceive a positive mood within the club and among the partners. “Together we will come out of this difficult phase stronger,” he said.

In terms of sport, things are going mixed for the “Veilchen” this season. Thanks to a winning streak, the gap to the top six in the league was reduced. After the 0-1 defeat at the WAC at the weekend, Austria is currently in eighth place in the table, four points behind sixth-placed Wolfsberger.

In addition to Austria, there were also LASK (-3.74 million euros), Austria Klagenfurt (-1.92 million), Hartberg (-1.06 million), newly promoted Blau-Weiß Linz (-612,000) and WSG Tirol (-557,000) a negative annual result. Number two behind Salzburg was Sturm Graz with a profit of almost two million. Austria Lustenau (920,000), Altach (368,000), WAC (83,000) and Rapid (49,000) came in behind.
