Labels, retailers and artists generated 273.2 million euros in sales with their music in 2023 – 10.2 percent more than in the previous year. This means that the domestic music market is growing for the seventh time in a row.
Growth is once more being driven by streaming. More than eight out of ten euros are now generated digitally. Streaming sales rose by 16.5 percent to 167.6 million euros. 18.2 billion songs were accessed on the platforms. That’s 3.4 billion more than in 2022. “Streaming is clearly our growth driver,” says Dietmar Lienbacher, President of the Association of the Austrian Music Industry (ifpi).

But streaming also brings problems for local artists. Because many songs are listened to because they are suggested by the platforms in playlists. And these playlists are usually generated based on the number of hits. “Artists from the big music markets have advantages,” says ifpi board member Hannes Tschürtz. Only 16.3 percent of the albums streamed in this country came from Austria, while the proportion of songs was only 4.6 percent. In 2023, 184 million songs were available for access on global streaming platforms. Oversupply is increasingly seen as a problem because it includes AI-generated songs that might reduce artists’ income.
Sales of physical recordings remained almost stable in the previous year. At 31.9 million euros, there was a loss of almost three percent. While CDs and music DVDs continued to lose popularity, vinyl saw an increase of 16 percent. 12.3 million euros were sold with records and 17.8 million with CDs. “If this trend continues, records might overtake CDs in the foreseeable future,” says President Lienbacher.
The most successful domestic artist in 2023 was once once more RAF Camorra, who has five songs in the top 100 of the annual singles charts and produced the second best-selling album with “XV”. The only thing that was often sold over the (virtual) counter was “Hackney Diamonds” by the Rolling Stones. The best-selling song last year was “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, ahead of “Komet” by Udo Lindenberg and Apache 207.
