Austrian Steel Titan Scores Big in Electricity Subsidy Windfall

In 2022, voestalpine received the highest electricity price compensation in Austria: 35.3 million euros went to voestalpine Stahl GmbH, and six other voest companies together received a further 18.2 million euros.

This emerges from the report on the Electricity Cost Compensation Act 2022 presented by Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens), the parliamentary correspondence reported on Wednesday. The steel company thus received more than a quarter of the total funding amount of 185 million euros.

In total, 44 companies with 76 systems were supported by the Electricity Price Compensation Act 2022. In addition to companies in the metal industry, the paper industry in particular received high subsidies. The funding for companies should – based on EU emissions certificate trading – cover up to 75 percent of the indirect CO2 costs actually incurred in 2022, which means that the companies received a large part of their spending on CO2 certificates back.

The law was part of an anti-inflation package from the turquoise-green federal government and was aimed at large international companies with more than one gigawatt hour of electricity consumption per year that fall under the EU emissions trading system ETS.
