Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel didn’t make it: their semi-documentary feature film “Vera”, which was submitted by Austria as a candidate for the Foreign Oscar 2024, was not included in the shortlist of the last 15 works, which has now been presented by the responsible Oscar Academy . But another Austrian entry is still in the running: director Mark Gerstorfer can still hope for an award with his short film “The Invisible Border”.

The 27-minute long feature film by the Hallein native deals with a deportation in Vienna in the middle of the night and is one of 15 works nominated in the Best Short Fiction category. Whether Gerstorfer can also look forward to the actual Oscar gala on March 10, 2024 will be decided on January 23, when the final five nominations will be announced in the individual categories, which also applies to the foreign Oscar, to which 88 countries have contributed had submitted.

Among the 15 works that are now on the shortlist, for Japan, is the poetic feature film “Perfect Days” by the German director Wim Wenders, in which she tells the mindful, happy life of the toilet cleaner Hirayama (Koji Yakusho). Should Wenders make it onto the final nomination list, this would be the fourth nomination for the 78-year-old, who has already been nominated for an Oscar with the music documentary “Buena Vista Social Club”, the 3D dance film “Pina” and the photographer’s portrait “The Salt of the Earth”. .

The German Oscar candidate “The Teacher’s Room” by director Ilker Çatak is still in the running, as is Finland with Aki Kaurismäki’s melancholic love film “Falling Leaves”, Spain with the successful film “The Snow Company”, Ukraine with “20 Days in Mariupol” or Great Britain with the literary film adaptation “The Zone of Interest”.
