Austria’s slaughterhouses can now also export less valuable parts of the pig to China. “For China, the ears, trunks and feet of pigs are delicacies, so there are additional opportunities for Austria to market the pig as a whole,” said Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (VP) during a visit to Beijing.
Previously, slaughterhouses were only allowed to export precious parts of the pig such as fillet, belly and ham. After the approval process has been completed in China, parts that are used in animal feed on the domestic market can now also be exported.
Last year around 5,000 tons of Austrian pork went to China. In addition, Totschnig was able to contract additional export opportunities for Austrian sheep and goat milk in China. Similar agreements for beef are currently being negotiated.
