Vienna (OTS) The Austrian Obesity Society published a groundbreaking consensus paper on the diagnosis and treatment of people with obesity at the annual meeting on October 12, 2023. This document was written by leading experts working in Austria and places a clear focus on the treatment of obesity as a chronic disease in adults. For the first time in Austria, a therapy concept for adults was developed by experts under the patronage of the Austrian Obesity Society.

Obesity is a widespread and complex chronic disease that has become the focus of medical attention due to its high prevalence and its numerous concomitant and secondary diseases. The continually increasing number of those affected and the improved treatment options made the creation of this consensus paper necessary. From a medical perspective, weight loss is important for preventing accompanying and secondary illnesses.

*Emphasis on drug therapy*

An important step in this consensus paper is the clear emphasis on the importance of drug therapy. The experts agree that medications are a valuable and often necessary addition to other therapeutic approaches. This highlights the importance of a holistic approach to treating obesity. A treatment path is recommended for doctors who treat people with obesity. Language sensitivity when dealing with those affected is once once more emphasized.

*Metabolic and bariatric surgery is indicated from a BMI of 35 kg/m²*

The consensus paper also addresses clarification of the indications for bariatric surgery. Many international specialist societies already recommend surgical treatment for BMI > 35 kg/m² instead of 40 kg/m² as was previously the case. The experts have now also introduced this threshold for patients who live in Austria in order to ensure the best possible care. In particular, cohorts such as people with type 2 diabetes or fatty liver disease would benefit significantly from bariatric surgery. Important aspects of lifelong follow-up care following bariatric surgery are also discussed, including the prevention and management of post-interventional weight gain.

This consensus paper serves as a guide for doctors who treat people with obesity. It reflects the current state of knowledge and the consensus of experts and contributes to improving care for people with obesity.

The Austrian Obesity Society encourages medical professionals to familiarize themselves with the consensus paper to ensure the best possible treatment for people with obesity. The work is in Specialist journal Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift open-access accessible
