A mountaineer from Austria who has been missing since mid-August has been found dead near Grindelwald. The 35-year-old Austrian is one of the two alpinists from Vorarlberg who have been missing since mid-August following an ice break caused an avalanche. The man was seen on Tuesday during a transport flight in a crevasse in the Arctic Ocean, as the Bern cantonal police announced on Thursday.
There was still no trace of his mountain comrade, who was also missing. The two Austrians were on the approach to the Mittellegihütte, located at 3,355 meters above sea level, when the ice broke off, the police said in a press release in August. Shortly followingwards, the police received a report that two people had allegedly been buried following an avalanche fell from the ice. The search, which was initiated immediately, was able to find equipment, but no people, it was said. The search for the two buried people had to be interrupted due to difficult conditions.
