There is a Styrian final for men in Bad Waltersdorf and a Lower Austrian final for women.

The Austrian Indoor Championships 2023 are entering the home stretch. The individual finals will take place in the Sportaktivpark Bad Waltersdorf from 10:30 a.m. There will be a home win for the men: the top-ranked, clear title favorite Filip Misolic (STTV) and the unseeded surprise man Hans-Peter Kaufmann (STTV) claim victory in an all-Styrian encounter. In the women’s category, two 17-year-olds from Lower Austria are fighting for the championship honor in a surprise final, the wildcard holder Alexandra Zimmer (NÖTV) and the qualifier Ava Schüller (NÖTV), both of whom have already made a name for themselves several times at youth level.

STTV dominance for men, NÖTV dominance for women

In the men’s category, four STTV players made it to the semi-finals, three from the squad of the Bundesliga series winner ATV RE team future Irdning. The only non-Irdninger continued his successful run there too: after, among other things, victories against the ATP-ranked Paul Werren (WTV/7) and qualifier Gregor Ramskogler (OÖTV), Kaufmann also took on the second-seeded Viennese Thomas Statzberger, formerly number 433 World, out 6:4, 3:6, 6:3. In the title fight, the 21-year-old from TSV Hartberg-Tennis will face the current world number 156 as a clear underdog. Misolic, who prevailed in the Irdningen duel with Jan Kobierski 6:4, 6:2.

For women, however, the NÖTV share in the semifinals was 100 percent. Even seven of the eight quarter-finalists are registered with a Lower Austrian club. With a 6:1, 6:4 over the top seed from Salzburg Arabella Koller (OÖTV), number 974 in the WTA ranking, Zimmer eliminated the last player not assigned to the NÖTV in the quarterfinals. Thanks to a 6:3, 7:5 against her 18-year-old BMTC teammate Liel Marlies Rothensteiner (NÖTV/6), who had immediately prevailed in another BMTC duel against Claudia Gasparovic (NÖTV/3), she booked without a loss of a set the ticket to the final. In the lower half of the grid, Schüller had to accept a set loss in the first round against Maren Benko (TTV/8) as well as in the quarterfinals against the former world number 656. Marlies Szupper (NÖTV), but in the semifinals she showed no weaknesses against fourth seed Chiara Semmelmeyer (NÖTV) 6:2, 6:2.

Favorites dominate in the double competitions

The decisions in all double competitions were made on Saturday. For men and women, the top seeds prevailed. Dominik Wirlend (OÖTV) and Christoph Lang (WTV) were able to put Syl Gaxherri (BTV) and Fabian Gruber (STTV) in their place in the final with 6:4, 6:1. In the ladies category, last year’s double winner Veronika Bokor (NÖTV) defended her doubles title alongside Rothensteiner. In the final, the two beat third-ranked Benko and Lea Erenda (TTV) 6:1, 4:6 and 10:3 in the match tiebreak. In the quarterfinals, Rothensteiner/Bokor only narrowly won against 13-year-olds Kara Fronek (WTV) and Anna Pircher (TTV) 6:7, 6:3, 11:9. Pircher had also shown in the individual competition and after a victory over former national champion Yvonne Neuwirth (STTV) only narrowly lost to number one Koller 7:5, 2:6, 5:7.
