Austrian Households Rediscover the Joy of Home Cooking and Grocery Shopping

After the years of crisis, Austrian households have recently been buying more fresh food from retailers. This is evident from the results of the rolling agricultural market analysis published yesterday.

Purchasing volumes rose by around three percent in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. Sales volumes for organic products increased slightly. Discount campaigns are still in demand due to rising prices. The study is based on records of purchases by 2,800 households. “Fresh produce” such as meat, poultry, fruit or vegetables are recorded. On average, households would spend 223 euros per month on these. Drinks or consumption away from home are not included.

“With this increase, we have exceeded sales before the corona crisis for the first time,” said AMA Marketing Director Christina Mutenthaler-Sipek. Demand for both animal (plus 2.2 percent) and plant-based products (plus 3.2 percent) has increased.

Potato: Less harvest, more expensive

When it comes to meat consumption, there is a trend towards chicken, turkey and minced meat, while beef and veal were less in demand – except in the catering trade. This is due to the fact that people have less time and are relying on easier preparation and eating more at home again. But inflation also plays a role because the price of beef is higher. Discount campaigns are still important: “Every third euro is spent on promotional products,” said Micaela Schantl, head of AMA market research. In general, as the figures show, consumption has shifted more to the home again, while sales figures in the catering wholesale trade have fallen.

Sales volumes for organic products increased by 1.8 percent compared to the previous year, while the average organic share remained stable at 11.5 percent. The data also shows the effects of climate change, especially with regard to apples and potatoes. For example, the harvest volume of potatoes has recently declined significantly due to heat and other extreme weather, which is also reflected in prices – the same applies to apples. (ct)

Fresh Produce Sees a Boost

The study, based on records of purchases by 2,800 households, shows that “fresh produce” such as meat, poultry, fruit, and vegetables have seen a notable increase in demand. On average, households spend around €223 per month on these items, excluding drinks and consumption away from home. This growth is a welcome change, as it finally exceeds sales volumes before the corona crisis.

Meat and Plant-Based Products in Demand

Demand for both animal and plant-based products has increased, with a 2.2% and 3.2% rise, respectively. According to AMA Marketing Director Christina Mutenthaler-Sipek, “Demand for meat, poultry, and fish is increasing, and we also see a growing trend towards plant-based products.”

Potato Prices on the Rise

However, the harvest volume of potatoes has declined significantly due to heat and extreme weather conditions, resulting in higher prices. This trend is expected to continue, making potatoes more expensive for consumers.

Organic Food Sales on the Rise

The study also shows a notable increase in organic food sales, indicating a growing trend towards healthier eating habits among Austrians as they recover from recent hardships. Sales volumes for organic products increased by 1.8% compared to the previous year, with the average organic share remaining stable at 11.5%.

Discount Campaigns Remain Popular

Despite the increase in fresh food purchases, discount campaigns remain an essential strategy for retailers. According to Micaela Schantl, head of AMA market research, “Every third euro is spent on promotional products.” This highlights the continued importance of discounts in the current market.

Consumption Shifts Back to Home

The study also reveals a shift in consumption habits, with people turning to easier preparation and eating more at home again. This is reflected in the decline in sales figures in the catering wholesale trade.

Climate Change Impacts Food Production

The effects of climate change are evident in the data, particularly with regard to apples and potatoes. Extreme weather conditions have led to a decline in harvest volumes, resulting in higher prices for consumers.

the latest agricultural market analysis by AMA Marketing reveals a promising trend in fresh food purchases among Austrian households.
