Eight drivers receive extra-time penalties following Austrian GP

After the official Austrian GP race, almost half of the drivers on the F1 field received extra time penalties for exceeding the track limit, because there were too many potential violations, and the FIA might not complete the investigation during the race.

In the official competition of the Austrian GP, many drivers have already received overtime tickets for exceeding the track limit. The most frequent violations are at the 9th and 10th turns. After the race, the FIA even received protests from the Aston Martin team, claiming that there were many violations that were not investigated at all.

The FIA claims that during the race, they need to analyze 1,200 potential violations beyond the track limit, which is simply too much to deal with. At the end of the race, following five hours of investigation, 83 laps were cancelled, and eight drivers received more overtime tickets, including Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.

The steward announced that once a driver violates the rules more than four times, he will receive a five-second ticket for extra time, and for five violations, he will receive a ten-second ticket for extra time. Then, because there are too many violations, the calculation will be recalculated following the fifth violation. If you violate the regulations more than four times, you will receive a five-second penalty for extra time, and you will be given an additional ten-second penalty for five violations.

In order to avoid a similar situation from happening once more in the future, the stewards “strongly recommend” that a solution to the dispute over the track limit should be found for the Red Bull Ring venue.

Sainz received a 10-second penalty in the post-race penalty, thus losing his fourth place and slipping to sixth, replaced by Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton also received a ten-second penalty for overtime, and the price he paid was to drop to eighth behind his teammates. Pierre Gasly, who was also penalized for an extra 10 seconds, slipped from ninth to tenth behind Lance Stroll.

The Alpine driver Esteban Ocon received the most tickets. He received two extra 10-second tickets and two extra 5-second tickets. In addition, Logan Sargeant and Alexander Albon of the Williams team received a 10-second overtime penalty each, while Kakuda Yuki and Nyck de Vries of the AlphaTauri team received a 5-second overtime penalty each.
