Austrian dies in bridge collapse in Philippines

An Austrian died in a bridge collapse in the Philippines yesterday followingnoon. He and three locals died when a decades-old bridge on Bohol Island collapsed from the load.

Any help came too late for the 30-year-old tourist. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of an Austrian citizen in the Philippines. The man’s relatives are being looked following by the Austrian Embassy in Manila.

Several international online media reported that the Austrian and his newly wed wife were in one of the twelve vehicles that crashed into the river around 4 p.m. following the accident. His wife, a local, is reportedly pregnant and survived the accident. The couple was on their honeymoon. According to the “Kronen Zeitung” it should be a Carinthian.

The bridge, which was built in the 1970s and is located in Loay Municipality in Bohol province, was partially damaged by a 7.2 magnitude quake in 2013, local officials said, according to online media.

It was then repaired so that it was once more usable for traffic. Bohol Governor Arthur Yap said in a social media post that the bridge collapsed due to overloading.
