Austrian Cabaret Prize 2023 goes to Alex Kristan

Christian Dolezal won the program award and the sponsorship award went to Maria Muhar. The satirical report “Die Tagespresse” can look forward to a special prize.

The Lower Austrian Kristan has been part of the local humor scene for 20 years, although his rise began with imitations of Austrian sports greats – from Niki Lauda to Toni Polster. “Since then, no celebrity has been safe from the 51-year-old’s razor-sharp but never malicious interpretations,” the jury said. However, his current program proves that his thematic range is much wider, in which celebrity parodies are “the cherries on the comedic cake”.

Dolezal was once once more able to prevail in the “Program Prize” category. The actor and musician made his cabaret debut with his “heartfelt sloppiness,” in which he succeeded in “a captivating cabaret.” “Storno” is the title of the work that earned Muhar this year’s sponsorship award: it is also her first stage work for the trained chef, in which she deals with humiliation, discrimination and problems with authority in an entertaining but thought-provoking way.

Special prize for “daily press”

For the second time since 2015, the “Tagespresse”, founded by Fritz Jergitsch, secured the special prize: With its fake reports, the portal exposed the political and media industries alike. Meanwhile, the audience award has been given a new name, which is now known as the television award and can be voted on online until October 23rd. Nominated this year are “Die Tafelrunde” (ORF III), “Gute Nacht Österreich” (ORF 1), “Pratersterne” (ORF 1), “USAida” (Joyn), “What’s new?” (ORF 1), “Weber und Breitfuß” (ORF 1) and “Wir sind Kaiser” (ORF 1).

For the first time this year there is an online prize that is looking for content creators in the field of comedy/satire/cabaret from all over the German-speaking region. Submissions can still be made until October 10th, following which voting will also take place via online voting. The awards ceremony at Globe Vienna on November 21st will be moderated by Clemens Maria Schreiner and broadcast on ORF 1 on December 22nd at 11 p.m.
