The 50th season of the Austrian Bundesliga began with a draw. LASK and Rapid parted on Friday in front of 16,790 spectators in Linz with a 1: 1 (0: 1). Newcomer Matthias Seidl had given Hütteldorfer the lead in the 23rd minute, Felix Luckeneder managed to equalize in the 95th minute for the Upper Austrians, who were particularly disappointing in the first half.

In addition to Seidl, who was brought in from LASK city rivals Blau-Weiss Linz, Rapid began another new acquisition with Nenad Cvetković. The people of Linz, major buyers this summer, started with eleven kickers who were with the club last season.

When it comes to personnel, neo-coach Thomas Sageder relied on the tried and tested, and in terms of playing style they should switch to increased pressing. However, there was nothing to be seen of that before the change of sides – LASK seemed unsettled, while Rapid presented itself confidently and physically strong.

Guido Burgstaller fired the first warning shot after 25 seconds, his attempt missed the short corner. In the 15th minute, the 2022/23 top scorer missed a sitter.

After a long throw-in and a header from Cvetković, Burgstaller appeared alone in front of the goal, but was denied by goalie Tobias Lawal (15′), as was Nicolas Kühn (16′).

At 0: 1 Lawal finally had no chance. Thorsten Schick played the ball low into the sixteen, Seidl took aim and Philipp Ziereis deflected the ball from the goalie. After that, LASK was on the ropes and Rapid failed to shoot out a higher lead.

A Kühn goal was rightly disallowed for offside (26′), Leo Querfeld shot wide from a good position (33′), and in a few other actions Rapid repeatedly put the Linz defense under pressure without capitalizing on it.

Sageder reacted at half-time, bringing on Ibrahim Mustapha and Moussa Kone for Keito Nakamura and Marin Ljubičić and the tide looked to be turning. After a duel in the penalty area, Mustapha unsuccessfully demanded a penalty from Schick (50′), and Rapid’s goalie Niklas Hedl then saved against Moses Usor (54′) and Robert Zulj (55′). In addition, Usor only hit the side netting (56th).

After that, LASK retained control of the game, but could not create any compelling chances for a long time. Rapid remained stable on the defensive and only looked for the way forward towards the end of the game, shots from Grüll (74′), Burgstaller (76′) and Kühn (81′) missed their target.

At the other end, Ivan Ljubic, who had just come on as a substitute, celebrated the supposed 1-1 lead, although Zulj’s corner had already crossed the goal line (80′).

Fally Mayulu missed the chance for the second Rapid goal, he failed at Lawal (93rd). This was to take revenge in the 95th minute when Luckeneder, who had moved up, placed the ball in the net from close range. Originally, four minutes of stoppage time were indicated.
