Austria has a place in the seeded field in each of the five competitions at the European Table Tennis Championships starting on Tuesday in Linz. In the singles, defending champion Sofia Polcanova is ranked number two and Daniel Habesohn is number 23. In the doubles, Robert Gardos/Habesohn and the defending champions Polcanova/Bernadette Szöcs (ROU) are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively. The mixed doubles Polcanova/Gardos starts on Wednesday as number four.
All other players involved in singles, doubles and mixed doubles have to qualify on Tuesday. In singles, this is played in groups of three and four, from which the first-placed teams then play against the second-placed teams in a play-off for 32 free main field places.
The countdown to the table tennis home European Championship is underway
Andreas Levenko, Gardos and Maciej Kolodziejczyk are top seeds in their pools, Julian Rzihauschek and Liu Zhenlong are each number two. The top seed in the men’s singles is the French Olympic bronze medalist Felix Lebrun ahead of the Swedish Olympic silver medalist Truls Möregardh, the German Patrick Franziska and his compatriot and defending champion Dang Qiu. Polcanova is preceded by Szöcs. Behind her are the French Yuan Jia Nan and the German Nina Mittelham, vice European champion in Munich 2022.
