Austria is at the beginning of a new flu wave, as the latest figures from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) show. This week, 213,487 people have already reported sick, an increase of 13 percent compared to the previous week.

What is particularly alarming is the 55% increase in cases of real flu to a total of 1,876 sick reports within just one week. Experts fear that this trend will only increase in the coming days, especially as students return to class.

Schools as potential virus sources

With the end of the holidays and the start of school, the risk of further spread of the virus increases, as students can bring their infections with them from the holidays and infect others. The majority of sick reports, a total of 54,258, are due to flu-like infections, an increase of a third compared to the previous week.
