“Austria is sticking to the jointly agreed EU sanctions to the point and comma,” tweeted Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
Austria continues to purchase gas from Russia and also pays for it in euros. It was brief due to a report by the Russian news agency TASS, according to which Austria was ready to pay for gas in rubles. However, it continues to apply that Austria in euros to an account of Gazprombank pays for the gas deliveries. There the amount will then be exchanged by Russia for rubles, the Federal Chancellery announced on Wednesday.
“Before fake news of Russian propaganda spreads further here. The OMV Naturally, gas deliveries from Russia will continue to be paid for in euros. Austria adheres to the points and commas that were jointly decided EUsanctions,” tweeted the Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
Russia stopped gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday. Nehammer told the Council of Ministers that there was information that both states were refusing to accept the payment terms stipulated by Gazprom. Poland has also been in the process of making itself independent of Russian gas for some time, according to the Chancellor – namely by means of its own pipeline to Norway, more nuclear power and the continued operation of lignite-fired power plants. Bulgaria can also supply itself with liquid gas through the seaports – more easily than Austria.
OMV, on the other hand, accepted Russia’s terms of payment, which was classified as compliant with the sanctions, according to Nehammer. At the same time, he noted that it is of course impossible to estimate how the development might continue in the event of an additional escalation. Germany also wants to pay for gas from Russia via Gazprombank’s foreign currency clearing account.
