A 33-year-old Australian tourist entered the grounds of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius yesterday on a hired scooter for a tour of the archaeological site. The Australian covered a kilometer and a half before being stopped and reported by the Carabinieri, local media reported.
The man had used the opening of a driveway during routine work to enter the archaeological site on a scooter. The surprised tourist explained to the Carabinieri that he had not known that the streets of Pompeii were not accessible to motor vehicles. After it was determined that the tourist had not caused any damage, he was reported for trespassing in the archaeological park.
The ancient city of Pompeii lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. When the volcano erupted in AD 79, ash, mud and lava buried the settlements and partially preserved the city. Pompeii was rediscovered in the 18th century. The archaeological site, which repeatedly unearths sensational finds, is one of the most popular sights in Italy and one of the country’s most important tourist attractions.
