Australian state announces rise in monkeypox cases, warns of its spread in Africa

“Since June 1, 2024, 93 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the state. As of June 1, only one case has been detected in 2024, 56 cases in 2022 and 12 cases in 2023,” the health department said in a statement.

She stressed that the majority of those infected are men who have homosexual contacts.

Health authorities have urged people to seek immediate advice from their GP or sexual health service, even if their symptoms are mild.

Seven News reported that an earlier version of the virus that caused a global outbreak in 2022 is spreading in Australia. The new version, currently prevalent in the Republic of the Congo, has a higher death rate.

“There have been more than 15,000 cases of monkeypox reported in Central Africa this year, many of them caused by the new strain,” said Dr Jeremy McNulty, NSW’s chief executive of preventive health.

“Chickenpox is spread through skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact, and often starts with small, blister-like skin lesions, especially in hard-to-see areas such as the genitals, anus or buttocks,” he added.

Earlier, the Africa Centres for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) declared a public health emergency over the outbreak of monkeypox on the continent, and called on the international community to help collect about 2 million doses of the vaccine.

For its part, the Russian Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection “Rospotrebnadzor” stated that there is no threat of the spread of “monkeypox” in Russia, and that there are sufficient testing systems that allow the virus to be detected in the shortest possible time.
