Sinner grabs me! (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3)

With a characteristic forehand down the line, Jannik Sinner wins his first Grand Slam. What a phenomenal comeback from the Italian, who managed to come back from a 2-0 deficit in sets.

Fifth set! (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4)

Sinner does exactly the same as in the previous set and breaks at the right time. We go to a fifth set, which will be the fourth of this tournament for Medvedev. Can he get another barrel of energy from somewhere?

Even (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 4-4)

The fourth set follows the trend of the third and is fairly even. We’ve already seen break points for both players, but neither Medvedev nor Sinner have been able to hit the other’s serve yet.

Sinner grabs me! (3-6, 3-6, 6-4)

Here we go! Sinner breaks at the right time, takes the set and we finally have a match. The audience was already on the Italian’s side and he now seems to be moving towards that. Can he maintain this momentum and take control of the match?

Second set (3-6, 3-6)

The second set also goes to Daniil Medvedev. For a moment it seemed that Jannik Sinner had found a way back in this set, but the third-placed Russian was back on track just in time and secured the set win. 2-0 now for Medvedev, this will be a difficult task for Sinner.

Break (3-6, 1-4)

It is currently Daniil Medvedev who decides what happens. The Russian doesn’t miss a ball, dictates the pace and Jannik Sinner has no idea what to do. He seems to have found the key to the Italian’s game at the right time.

Set win (3-6)

Medvedev serves great in the first set. It is almost impossible to play once morest a first serve percentage of 86% and Jannik Sinner cannot do that. Thanks to two breaks, the first set goes to the third-placed Russian.

Break (1-2)

While you might have thought that Daniil Medvedev would have difficulty moving following three previous five-setters, that is not at all the case. The Russian breaks Sinner in his second service game and avoids a break. He seems to have a handle on the Italian’s game plan early in the match.

Excellent chance of winning the main prize

After two very exciting weeks full of top tennis in Melbourne, only Sinner and Medvedev are still in the running to win the first major of 2024. It would be unique for Sinner to win a Grand Slam, Medvedev already wrote the 2021 US Open once in his name.

Between the violence of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and, in the more distant past, Roger Federer, it was not that easy to win a Grand Slam. Hence, some big names may have won fewer top prizes than you would expect. That many opportunities do not arise and that is why Sinner and Medvedev are keen to seize this opportunity.

Elise Mertens in women’s doubles final

Before you know it, Carlos Alcaraz is also running rampant once more, so it is also fun to win finals. Sinner rolled through his matches at the Australian Open with great ease and starts as a big favourite, Medvedev showed himself to be a true marathon man and is considered an underdog. How fit are the legs still?

We will all experience it when the first point of the final is contested around 9:30 am. The commentary for Sinner vs Medvedev is provided by Kristie Boogert. Apart from this final, there is also the final battle in women’s doubles, in which Elise Mertens can try to win her fourth major alongside Su-wei Hsieh.
