Australia’s top intelligence chief says a brutal knife attack at a Sydney church appeared to be the act of one individual, with no direct evidence of a wider plan.
“At this stage, it appears to be the actions of an individual,” Australian Security Intelligence Organization chief Mike Burgess said in rare public comments.
“At this time, there is no indication anyone else was involved, but the investigation remains open.”
He also said the country would not revise its terror threat level.
“The threat level remains at the ‘possible’ level, one incident like this doesn’t actually cause us to change the threat level,” Burgess said.
It is known that a priest was brutally attacked with a knife during a live broadcast service at a church in Sydney. Police have detained a 16-year-old teenager and said the attack was an act of religiously motivated “terrorism”.
Police also appealed for calm from angry local residents.
