The 70th edition of the Tour of Overijssel was won by Declan Trezise. The 21-year-old Australian was surprisingly the fastest on the streets of Rijssen. In the sprint he beat Oded Kogut from Israel. Coen Vermeltfoort, the winner of the past two editions, had to settle for third place this time.

Today the 70th edition of the Tour of Overijssel was on the program. The course has undergone some minor changes, but much else has remained the same. Well-known Overijssel climbs such as the Holterberg, Lemelerberg and Tankenberg were present once more. Tour de Tietema-Unibet was the only professional team at the start. But we had to look for the top favorite – and the winner of the past two editions – at VolkerWessels, with Coen Vermeltfoort.

For a moment, a strong breakaway group – including TDT-Unibet rider and home favorite Jelle Johannink – took the lead. However, twelve kilometers from the finish, these escapees were caught by the oncoming peloton, following which VolkerWessels controlled the race towards the finish.

And so, following more than two hundred kilometers, we sprinted for victory with a large group. Most eyes were on Vermeltfoort, but the experienced sprinter was unable to push his wheel across the line first. He had to acknowledge his superiority in an Australian and a rider from Israel.

The victory surprisingly went to the relatively unknown Declan Trezise. The 21-year-old Australian plays for the continental team ARA | Skip Capital and managed to deal with Oded Kogut from the training team of Israel Premier Tech and therefore Vermeltfoort in Rijssen. With Timo de Jong (4th) and Jelte Krijnsen (7th), two Dutchmen finished in the top ten.

It is Trezise’s first victory of the season. Last year he already showed his legs in the less traditional cycling countries. For example, he won a stage in the Tour de Kyushu on Japanese soil and became the winner of the Tour of Poyang Lake in China.
