Although no reason was given as to the reason for the withdrawal, Australian Football Association chief executive James Johnson said in July that government support and whether the tournament might be postponed to January or February 2024 might affect the plan. have.
Instead, Australia is pushing to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2026.
The Australian Football Association said, “We are very interested in hosting the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup, and in line with the schedule, we plan to submit an official and comprehensive plan to the AFC within this year.”
Previously, Australia, along with Korea, Indonesia and Qatar, expressed their intention to host the 2023 Asian Cup.
AFC is looking for a new venue for the tournament as China, which was originally scheduled to hold the tournament, abandoned it due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
AFC will receive official applications from countries that have announced their intention to host, conduct on-site inspections this month, and decide the venue on October 17th through the Executive Committee.
The deadline for submitting applications, which was originally until the 31st of last month, has been extended to the 15th of this month.
As Australia abandons the event, Korea continues to compete with the remaining two countries.
The Korea Football Association submitted a letter of intent to AFC on June 30, and plans to submit an official application within the submission deadline.
The Asian Cup, established in 1956, is the most prestigious national competition in Asia held every four years.
Korea achieved two consecutive victories in the Asian Cup inaugural tournament and the two home tournaments, and since then, has failed to reach the top, achieving runners-up four times (1972, 1980, 1988, and 2015).
On the same day, the Football Association held the Asian Cup announcement ambassador launch ceremony at the Jongno-gu Football Center in Seoul and started promoting the tournament in earnest.
