Hundreds of activists and students in Australia are protesting outside the country’s universities.

Against his war Israel at Gauze gathered today (03.05.02024) at one of its leading universities Australia, asking the educational institution to sever partnerships with companies with ties to Israel, in a move that comes in the wake of student sit-ins sweeping American campuses. Phil-Palestinian activists and students set up camp outside the University of Sydney’s main building last week.

Similar encampments have been set up at universities in Melbourne, Canberra and other Australian cities, while unlike in the US, where police have forcibly removed dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters from various higher education institutions, protest sites in Australia have been calm with limited police presence.

Demonstrators staged a protest calling on the University of Sydney to divest from companies with ties to Israel, echoing demands from students from the US, Canada and France.

Matt, 39, who was among the more than 300 gathered with his two-year-old son on his shoulders, said he was taking part in the rally to show that it is not just students who are angry regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza. “Once you understand what’s going on, you have a responsibility to try to get involved and raise awareness and show solidarity,” he told Reuters, declining to give his full details.

According to newsit, several hundred meters from the demonstration at the University of Sydney and separated by security guards, hundreds of people had gathered with Australian and Israeli flags, with speakers at the rally saying the pro-Palestinian demonstrations were making Jewish students and staff origin to feel unsafe on campus.

The University of Sydney’s vice-chancellor Mark Scott told local media yesterday that the pro-Palestinian camp can remain on campus in part because there is not the violence seen in the US. Although several police patrol cars were stationed at the entrance to the university, there was no police presence at either demonstration.
