Is it aliens? Or is it a portal to another world? A pink light in the sky that has worried residents of South Australia has a very mundane explanation.

When residents in the town of Mildura in the southern Australian state of Victoria looked up at the sky on Thursday night, they were at a loss. What is that pink glow? Is this the apocalypse? An alien invasion? Or a portal to a parallel world, such as in the TV series “Stranger Things”? The answer to every question is no – and the explanation for the mysterious lights is incredibly mundane.

“When I saw the glow, I stayed calm and composed and said to the children: ‘There’s nothing to worry regarding’,” says Tammy Szumowski BBC. Inside, however, the mother was extremely concerned. A phone call to her parents made things worse. “I called my mother and my father said the world was going to end.”

Light comes from local cannabis farm

As it turned out, the source of the frightening phenomenon was the powerful lights at a local medicinal cannabis farm. Rhys Cohen, head of communications at pharmaceutical company Cann Group, told the newspaper on Thursday, “The Guardian» that cannabis plants needed different light spectrums to promote their growth. “A red light spectrum is often used,” says Cohen.

The flowers receive 12 hours of light, while at night it is 12 hours of darkness. “Usually the blackout blinds close at the same time as the sun goes down,” the company’s CEO, Peter Crock, told the Australian radio show Breakfast. But that evening the blinds stayed open, so the sky turned pink for a while.

Cannabis improves the quality of life of patients in 70 percent of cases

Just a few weeks ago, the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) published a long-term study on the subject of medical cannabis: In 70 percent of the cases, the prescription of medical cannabis, cannabis flowers or cannabis extracts led to an improved quality of life for patients. In almost three quarters of the cases, the cannabis medicines improved the symptoms.

More than three quarters (76.4 percent) of the treatments were therefore due to chronic pain. Other frequently treated symptoms were spasticity (9.6 percent), weight loss (5.1 percent) and nausea and vomiting (2.2 percent). Cancer was present in 14.5 percent of the cases, and multiple sclerosis in 5.9 percent.
