Australia identifies two Saudi sisters amid ambiguity about the circumstances of their “extraordinary” deaths

(CNN) — Police found two Saudi sisters murdered in their Sydney apartment last month in “extraordinary” circumstances, as authorities appealed for more information.

Police found the bodies of Isra Abdullah al-Sahli, 24, and Amal Abdullah al-Sahli, 23, on 7 June, following concerns regarding a forensic report, according to a statement from NSW Police on Wednesday.

“Despite extensive investigations, investigators have not been able to ascertain how the two young women died. However, it is believed that the two women died some time ago before their whereregardings were determined,” the statement said.

New South Wales police confirmed to CNN that the two sisters arrived in Australia from Saudi Arabia in 2017. Police said, “The circumstances of their death were unusual because they showed no signs of injury.”

Claudia Alcroft, Detective Inspector NSW Police, said any information from the public might hold the key to resolving the investigation.

“Investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen or may have information regarding the movements of the two young women in the days and weeks leading up to their deaths – which we believe occurred in early May,” Olcroft said in a statement to NSW Police.

The Saudi consulate in Sydney, in a statement posted on Twitter, said it was in contact with the Australian authorities regarding the case. She added, “The consulate also expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the two deceased.”

CNN has contacted the Saudi Embassy in Canberra for comment.
