The Minister of Health and Prevention, Aurélien Rousseau, spoke this Wednesday, December 6, 2023 with Professor Amine Benyamina, President of the French Federation of Addictology (FFA).
On this occasion, the minister entrusted Professor Benyamina with a mission relating to the conduct of an in-depth diagnosis of the roots and determinants of addictive behavior among young people and innovative proposals for actions and public policies in the area of prevention of addictions among young people.
Indeed, although the results indicate a decline in substance use among young people since 2014, the prevalence remains high in France, compared to other European countries, according to data from the 9th survey on Health and Consumption during the Defense Preparedness Call (ESCAPAD) in March 2022.
Minister Aurélien Rousseau wishes, through this mission, to continue the Government’s efforts to respond to emerging addictive trends, particularly among socially vulnerable young people under the age of 25. The conclusions of the mission entrusted to Professor Benyamina are expected in the first quarter of 2024.
Resolute action from the Ministry of Health and Prevention
In the long term, alcohol, tobacco and cannabis represent the three main factors of morbidity among young people, and repeated consumption can lead to dependence at an early age.
The Minister of Health and Prevention is determined to promote effective actions for the prevention of addictions among young people, around the following axes:
- Prevent initiation/experimentation or delay its age;
- Avoid regular use;
- Identify early and regular uses as early as possible;
- Offer support adapted to this audience.
