August Employment Data: Increase in Quebec Jobs and Decline in Unemployment Rate

Employment in Quebec increased somewhat in August (+0.3%), allowing the unemployment rate to fall by 0.2 percentage points, reaching 4.3%.

Both part-time and full-time jobs were filled for the month of August in La Belle Province, according to Statistics Canada data released Friday.

Thus, part-time employment has increased by 0.5% since July (+843,000), when the number of full-time workers increased by 0.3% for the same period (+3 661,500).

The situation in the census metropolitan area (CMA) of Montreal is similar to the province, with an increase in employment (+0.5%) and a decline in the unemployment rate of 1.2%, reaching 5.2 %.

On the national side, the unemployment rate remained at 5.5% for this eighth month of 2023, following increasing for three consecutive months in May, June and July.

Employment mainly increased in the fields of professional, scientific and technical services (+52,000; +2.8%) and in construction (+34,000: 2.2%).

However, it fell back in education, a field which has already been facing a shortage for several months (-44,000; -2.9%).
