Today, August 19, in the Orthodox calendar the day of commemoration of the holy martyr Andriy Stratilat and others. He lived in the 3rd century and was a Roman military commander. He gained great fame for his military achievements and was known for his bravery. However, the most important thing in his life is how he accepted the Christian faith and died for it.
Andrew Stratilatus was a Roman tribune (military leader) in the city of Tarsus in Cilicia (modern Turkey). He served under Emperor Maximian (284–305). Andrew was a pagan and received an order from the emperor to fight against the Persians, who threatened the Roman Empire. He gathered an army and won a victory over the enemy.
Andrew, seeing the power and greatness of the Christian faith, accepted Christianity. He began to preach Christianity among his soldiers, and many of them also accepted faith in Christ. However, the recognition of Christianity was not approved in the Roman Empire, and Andrew was exposed. By order of Emperor Maximian, Andrew and his soldiers were arrested. They were tortured, trying to force them to renounce their faith, but they all remained faithful to Christ. As a result, Andrew and his 2,593 soldiers were executed around 305. According to legend, they were executed near the Tauros River (probably in modern Turkey).
Other Martyrs Among the martyrs who suffered together with Andrew were his soldiers who also converted to Christianity and were killed for their faith. They are part of his celebration and are revered as martyrs for Christ.
