Audrey Tautou: A Journey of Art, Motherhood, and Freedom

There are few personalities whose name is enough to make you want to go to a movie theater. And Audrey Tautou is one of them. But in the past five years, she hasn’t appeared on a poster even once. And if she makes a comeback on October 18, it will be for the dubbing only of Nina and the Secret of the Hedgehog.

She explained her desertion from the big screens in a (rare) interview with L’Obs. “I wanted to take the time and have my freedom of mind to devote myself to my personal projects, which I started a long time ago,” declared the eternal Amélie Poulain. Among these are photography (she has the habit, in particular, of taking photos of all the journalists she meets) but also drawing. Moreover, for the moment, she devotes a large part of her time to the illustration of a children’s book… of which she is also the author.

Discreet, she doesn’t talk too much regarding her work. Preferring to remain modest, as always: “As I am self-taught, everything takes a lot of time. I embarked on all these adventures without really realizing how difficult it would be.” But throughout the discussion, we feel that he lacked this creative freedom. “On a shoot, everything is organized, hierarchical, nothing is left to chance. We are good little soldiers, at least that’s how I experienced it. […] Life is an adventure, you have to dare to give yourself the freedom to be happy, to do what you love when you have luxury. I got it.”

And what she prefers above all is taking care of the little girl she adopted in 2019. “I must also say that my life has changed enormously with motherhood. I spend as much time as possible with my daughter.” This is why it is so rare in cinema. But, at 47, she has not yet retired from the big screens. It will just take the right project to arrive at the right time to once once more light up her sparkling eyes.
