Journalist Anabel Hernández recently revealed in the new episode of the Narcosistema podcast previously unreleased audios that confirm the version that Ismael “el Mayo” Zambada was betrayed by Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán, imprisoned in the US for drug trafficking.
The journalist’s revelations come amid a climate of tension within the Sinaloa Cartel, where the struggle for power is intensifying following the recent capture of its former founder, “El Mayo” Zambada.
Hernández revealed details about the meeting in which “El Mayo” was allegedly betrayed and which ended in a deadly ambush on July 25. The audios were allegedly obtained days before the founder of the Sinaloa Cartel sent a letter in which he spoke of the alleged betrayal.
In the first audio, a conversation can be heard between two alleged members of the Cartel detailing the betrayal that “El Mayo” Zambada allegedly suffered at the hands of Joaquín Guzmán López, one of Los Chapitos.
According to the audio, the hitmen comment on a meeting attended by “El Mayo” apparently to discuss matters, and he only took his most personal escort, made up of four people and the pilot they call “El Morenito.”
In the recording you can hear how, upon arriving at the place, “el Mayo’s” bodyguards were attacked: “And he says that they had already arrived at the place, they got off, they were entering, when they were already there, because those people were already sitting there, as soon as they arrived they killed the bodyguards, man, they didn’t catch them, they killed them, man, they killed them, when that one saw what was up he was already tied up, they tied him up, handcuffed him and just like they say ‘they tied him up, handcuffed him and let’s go’, but they killed the little black guy, our friend,” can be heard in the audio revealed by the journalist.
In the first audio it is mentioned that Two “El Mayo” “pointers” managed to escape the attack, and who managed to tell what happened at the meeting. “They didn’t know that two leaders escaped and the leaders are the ones who told this story, which is now the reality, it is not another version, it is the reality of what happened as it is,” can be heard in the recording.
The growing distrust towards the sons of “El Chapo” Guzmán is highlighted, as one of the hitmen comments that, after the betrayal suffered by “El Mayo”, no one will want to approach them:
“The kid, the shorty, isn’t going to talk to the other characters. Hey, do you want to be with me, come on? Who’s going to want to go talk to him right now? If the guy sees what he did to him, do you think anyone’s going to want to get close?” says one of the gunmen.
The betrayal of “El Mayo” is said to have been evident, since those who called him to the meeting were in complicity with his aggressors. “Here and in China, that was a motherfucking betrayal,” can be heard on the recording, reaffirming the perception that it was all an orchestrated plan.
The hitmen talk about the impact that this betrayal has on the cartel structure and it is mentioned that, after what happened, “el flaquito” (son of “el Mayo” Zambada, Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias “Mayito Flaco”) could be looking for allies and preparing for an open war against Los Chapitos.
“It’s an open secret, but right now he’s gone off the radar, but he’s like thinking, analyzing, point by point, and he’s talking to people to see who’s with him, because it’s not just about getting into fights and seeing what you’re going to do, it’s not like ‘oh, I got angry, let me go now’, because that would have been the same day, no, that’s not how it’s handled there, as you yourself are saying, he knows if he’s going to use force or if he’s going to use his head,” can be heard in the recording published by the journalist.
Second audio
A second audio revealed by Hernández speaks of the situation of “El Mayo” Zambada and the growing tension within the Sinaloa Cartel; it is also confirmed that the drug trafficker suffers from diabetes and is in critical health condition.
The audio, which comes from another member of the Sinaloa Cartel, describes details of the photos that were circulating on social media about the arrest of “El Mayo” and confirms that it is indeed him because of his nose: “His nose did look like that because he had surgery a long time ago and when they operated on his nose it didn’t turn out exactly right,” he details.
It also says that “El Mayo” receives dialysis treatments. “Diabetes was killing him,” the audio says. It also mentions that armed groups are already preparing for imminent clashes, which adds a new level of concern for security in Sinaloa.
In that audio a hitman comments: “They say there was a meeting […] and from there the snouts, the short legs (Los Chapitos), tied him up and threw him into the plane […] That one (El Mayito Flaco) is already very angry and now they are arming themselves.”
The conversation also refers to “El Mayo’s” escort, among them Rodolfo Chaidez (the other would be José Rosario Heras López) and they say that they do not appear and that “it is believed that they were killed.”
The conversation ends with a warning: “It is better not to go out, to be cautious and not to go out on the street right now,” which reflects the climate of fear and tension that prevails among the cartel members in the face of the imminent conflict.
The defense of “El Mayo” released a letter in which he claims to have been kidnapped and taken to the United States, thus ruling out the version that he turned himself in voluntarily, as the authorities have maintained.
In the letter, “El Mayo” explains that he was summoned to a meeting in Huertos del Pedregal, Culiacán, supposedly to help resolve political differences between leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, including Joaquín Guzmán López, but that ended in an ambush.
“I was kidnapped and brought to the United States by force and against my will,” Zambada said in the letter.
