A fourth person has been found dead following record flooding hit Auckland on Friday, police said on Sunday. A drone has located the lifeless body of a man in Onewhero, south of New Zealand’s largest city.
It had been washed away following heavy rains turned its streets into rivers and flooded the airport. According to Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni, regarding 3,000 homes remained without electricity on Sunday and many others without water.
The state of emergency declared in the city of 1.6 million inhabitants is still in force. Friday was the ‘wettest day’ on record in Auckland, according to New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins.
The airport reopened to domestic flights on Saturday and international flights were due to resume on Sunday.
For security reasons, two concerts by British pop star Elton John, which were scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Auckland as part of his farewell tour, had to be canceled.
