New data theft. After Cultura, Boulanger and Free, the northern brand Auchan was, in turn, the victim of a cyberattack, it announced to its customers in an email.
«A few hundred thousand» of customers are affected by this data theft, according to information de Tech&Co, which Auchan confirmed to La Voix du Nord. On its chat, Auchan confirms that only customers affected by the data leak received an email to warn them.
The hackers notably had access to surnames, first names, email addresses, postal addresses, telephone numbers, family compositions, loyalty card numbers and the amount available in customers’ loyalty pots.
The northern brand, which announced a major social plan a few days ago, tells its customers that “banking details, password, pin code» are not affected by this data leak.
Strengthening controls
In an email sent to its customers, and broadcast on X, Auchan indicates that “all necessary measures were taken immediately to put an end to this attack and strengthen the protection of [ses] information systems“. And to specify that among these measures is the reinforcement “checks in the event of reduction» loyalty cards, so that hackers cannot use the money won by customers.
If the hackers did not steal the customers’ IBANs, according to Tech&Co, the stolen information could allow the hackers to pose as Auchan and attempt to steal the customers’ banking information using phishing emails, resuming, for example, the company logo.

How can retailers enhance their cybersecurity measures to better protect customer data from future breaches?
**Interview: Cybersecurity in Retail Following Auchan’s Data Breach**
**Interviewer:** Today, we’re speaking with Dr. Emma Leclerc, a cybersecurity expert with over a decade of experience in protecting sensitive data for major retailers. Dr. Leclerc, thank you for joining us.
**Dr. Emma Leclerc:** Thank you for having me.
**Interviewer:** Auchan recently revealed that it was the latest victim of a cyberattack, affecting ”a few hundred thousand” customers. What does this breach indicate about the current state of cybersecurity in the retail sector?
**Dr. Leclerc:** This incident highlights a severe vulnerability in the retail sector, which has become a prime target for cybercriminals. Retailers hold vast amounts of sensitive customer information, making them attractive targets. The fact that Auchan was not alone in this crisis—following similar breaches at Cultura, Boulanger, and Free—shows that this is a widespread issue.
**Interviewer:** What types of data were compromised in this breach?
**Dr. Leclerc:** According to Auchan, the hackers accessed names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, loyalty card numbers, and even the amounts in customers’ loyalty pots. Fortunately, they confirmed that more sensitive information, like banking details and passwords, was not affected. However, this level of data exposure can still have serious implications for the affected individuals.
**Interviewer:** Speaking of implications, what steps should customers take if they believe their data may have been compromised?
**Dr. Leclerc:** Customers should monitor their accounts closely for unusual activity. It’s also wise to change passwords associated with their Auchan accounts and consider using different passwords for other accounts. They might also want to enable two-factor authentication whenever possible, as it adds an extra layer of security.
**Interviewer:** Auchan mentioned in their communications that they are working on strengthening their security measures. What can retailers do to prevent future breaches like this?
**Dr. Leclerc:** Retailers need to adopt a multi-faceted approach to cybersecurity. This includes regular software updates, strong encryption for stored customer data, employee training on security practices, and the implementation of robust incident response plans. Additionally, investing in advanced threat detection systems can help identify and mitigate attacks before they result in a breach.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, given the magnitude of these recent breaches, what can consumers do to protect their personal data in the digital age?
**Dr. Leclerc:** Consumers should be vigilant about the information they share online. Using secure passwords, being cautious about sharing personal data on social media, and regularly reviewing privacy settings on various platforms can help protect against data theft. It’s also a good practice to opt for retailers that have transparent cybersecurity policies and offer options for data protection.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Leclerc, for sharing your insights on this critical issue.
**Dr. Leclerc:** My pleasure! Thank you for bringing attention to the importance of cybersecurity.
