Media reports quoted police as saying that armed robbers broke into the home of Barcelona striker Pierre Emeric-Aubameyang and physically assaulted the player and his wife to force them to open a safe to steal jewels.
The Spanish newspaper El Pais said that the player and his wife, Alisha, suffered minor injuries. Aubameyang, 33, did not confirm any details of the theft.
Police said this was the second time in the past two months that Aubameyang’s home in Castelldefels, a suburb of Barcelona, had been burgled, although the player and his family were not at home during the first break-in.
According to media reports, four masked men broke into his home, threatened the player and his family with firearms, beat Aubameyang and his wife and forced them to open a safe to steal jewelry.
This is not the first time that prominent players in Europe have been robbed.
In December, Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo was attacked at his home in England, and Benfica defender Nicolas Otamendi was attacked during a burglary at his home in Portugal.
In Barcelona, the homes of Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati, Jordi Alba, Samuel Umtiti and Coutinho were robbed during the matches, according to the police.
Similar incidents have also been reported between players in Madrid, Seville and Valencia.
