AU Peace and Security Council Approves ECOWAS Measures After Niger Coup

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) approves the decisions imposed by ECOWAS following the July 26 coup in Niger that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum.

The final communiqué of the PSC meeting, which was held on Monday 14 August regarding the situation in Niger, has just been published. In this three-page text, the AU body, within which the debates were stormy, subscribes to the main measures, including military ones.

“Undertake an assessment of the implications » of a deployment in Niger

Indeed, the Peace and Security Council “ take note of ECOWAS’s decision to deploy its standby force.

But this Council at the same time asks the AU Commission undertake an assessment of the economic, social and security implications of such a deployment in Niger.

The CPS also says it “endorses” the decision of ECOWAS to impose sanctions. But, once more, ” while ensuring its gradual application and minimizing its disproportionate effect on Nigeriens ».

Niger is immediately suspended from all activities of the AU as well as its organs and institutions until the restoration of constitutional order in the country.

The PSC also calls on the AU and ECOWAS Commissions to urgently submit the list of members of the junta and their military and civilian supporters, including those involved in the violation of the rights of President Bazoum and other inmates, for targeted sanctions and the application of individual punitive measures ».

Finally, the PSC calls on AU Member States to fully implement the sanctions decided by the West African organization and more broadly all countries “ to refrain from any action likely to confer legitimacy on the illegal regime in Niger ».
