This Friday, September 1 marks the start of the new judicial year, which is accompanied by the usual mercuriales, these speeches prepared by the highest magistrates in the country. They are, on many occasions, used to convey a message to the country’s politicians. In his back-to-school speech, the Attorney General of Brussels, Johan Delmulle, is no exception to the rule. After having listed some statistics relating to the activity of the largest prosecutor’s office in the country, the magistrate took stock of the weighting commission. The latter was created in 2021, in response to the reduced investigative capacities of the Federal Judicial Police (PJF) in Brussels. Its objective: to sort the “Ecofin” files (all cases relating to economic or financial crime, such as corruption, money laundering or tax evasion) according to their degree of priority.
