The Office of the Attorney General of the Nation initiated a preliminary investigation to determine possible irregularities in the expansion of intensive care units (ICU) in the country during the covid-19 health emergency.

The opening of the investigation occurred following the statements made by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo, in which he assured that in the health system they “set up” a business to triple the ICUs and receive patients with complications, without having trained and qualified people to serve them.

“Here they set up a business with the covid and tripled the intensive care units, there it was done and nobody said anything. They opened intensive care units as if they were opening any kind of drugstore. It is more dangerous to be in an intensive care unit without having the people trained and qualified to attend to that. No, they have not said it, but the business was done and in a big way with the covid, ”said Minister Jaramillo at the time.

These statements generated criticism from various sectors, since the expansion of ICUs was essential for the care of seriously ill patients during the pandemic. Even President Gustavo Petro spoke regarding it, clarifying that he was not referring to health personnel and leaving the situation in the hands of justice.

“When you talk regarding corruption due to the purchase of UCI, you are not talking regarding corruption of doctors. Doctors did not buy ICUs. Let justice investigate,” Petro trilled.

“I, I said yes, as well as the UCI at a given time (…) I want to accept a debate from you, I accepted a debate from you. Hopefully you will sit me down for a debate and we will look at what happened in the pandemic and what happened with the ICUs. We do that debate once this happens. Let’s do it so you can see,” Jaramillo said then.

The accusations made by the minister will be investigated and analyzed by the Attorney General’s Office to determine if there were irregularities in the expansion of the ICUs and, if necessary, establish the corresponding responsibilities.

The Attorney General’s Office will request the minister to give testimony under sworn certification to expand his version on the subject and provide information on the entities or persons that might be involved in this situation.

With the opening of this preliminary investigation, the Public Ministry aims to identify and individualize those possibly responsible for this apparent disciplinary offense.
