Attorney General Tarek William Saab confirmed the arrest of citizens Aldo Roso Vargas and Ricardo Albacete Vidal for allegedly being part of a conspiracy to sabotage Venezuela’s electrical system.

“After gathering sufficient evidence, on July 9, arrest warrants were requested from the competent courts once morest Aldo Roso Vargas and Ricardo Alberto Albacete Vidal,” Saab said at a press conference.

The official added that search warrants were also issued for several properties located in Caracas, Táchira and Mérida, which are allegedly linked to the accused.

“During the raids, it was possible to verify that these citizens had in their possession a large quantity of strategic material, belonging to Corporación Eléctrica Nacional (Corpoelec), a strategic company of the Venezuelan State for offering a basic service such as electricity,” he said.

Aldo Roso Vargas was arrested on July 10 in El Valle, Caracas; while Ricardo Albacete was arrested on July 11 on Libertador Avenue in Caracas.

The complaint of the Vente Venezuela party

The Human Rights Committee of the Vente Venezuela party reported on July 11 that businessman Ricardo Albacete was detained by members of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin). Albacete had hosted opposition leader María Corina Machado in his home, located in the state of Táchira.

“Ricardo Albacete Vidal was arrested by Sebin officials in Caracas on the followingnoon of July 11. Hours earlier, his properties in the state of Táchira were raided, including the house where María Corina Machado stayed during her visit to the state,” the political party wrote on its X account (formerly Twitter).

Criminal lawyer and human rights defender Omar Mora Tosta described the arrest of businessman Albacete Vidal as an “arbitrary” measure and demanded his prompt release.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) Un Mundo Sin Mordaza condemned the raid on one of Ricardo Albacete’s homes and industrial warehouses and demanded that the State cease the “persecutions, arrests and arbitrary raids on the homes of citizens who think differently.”

The agency also called for an investigation into the raid on the home where Machado was staying, and urged the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), among other international organizations, to “take note of the matter and condemn the aforementioned attacks.”

On 3 July, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, presented his new report during an interactive dialogue with the member states of the organisation. Update on the situation in Venezuelain which he stated that the violation of human rights in the country continues to be exacerbated due to the actions of the Venezuelan authorities.

The High Commissioner referred to the detention of activists Rocío San Miguel and Carlos Julio Rojas, who have not had access to lawyers of their choice for their defense. In this regard, he demanded the release of all those arbitrarily detained, including Javier Tarazona, director of Fundaredes, who has been “unjustly” detained for three years.

“Since May 2023, we have documented 28 arrests of people with dissident views. These practices must end immediately. I urge accountability for those who are victims of repression,” he said.

The official said there are problems with the right to a fair trial. In this area, they have documented 29 cases of people being tried in the last year. He also indicated that detainees have no contact with lawyers or relatives, which constitutes the perpetration of a forced disappearance.

“People continue to be charged with terrorism charges that do not comply with human rights standards,” he added.
