Very handy at first glance, the recovery key can easily backfire on iPhone owners. Indeed, the only thing a thief needs to block you from your phone is none other than your PIN code.
It is a disconcerting discovery to say the least that the Wall Street Journal. In a article recently published, the American daily explains that it is quite possible for a thief to prevent you from accessing your data. Worse still, the technique is not complicated and can be applied by the first comer.
Concretely, the scheme only requires one thing: the victim’s PIN code. We can never repeat it enough, but be sure to use different codes. Whether it’s for your PIN, to unlock your phone, or to access various applications. In addition, you should always be on your guard when you are in a public place. To obtain your PIN code, you still need to be able to observe it.
An Apple ID flaw
If, despite all these precautions, a thief steals an iPhone and knows the PIN code, it is better to act quickly. In fact, all the criminal has to do is generate an emergency key to block access to the telephone from its legitimate owner. As a reminder, the recovery key is an Apple ID feature introduced in 2020 by the Cupertino company. These 28 randomly generated characters allow a user to regain control of their Apple ID account by resetting the password.
So the problem is easy to pinpoint. If the thief generates this famous emergency key before the owner, the latter permanently loses access to his account and all of his data. Fortunately, Apple is already aware of the problem and is already trying to solve it. “We work tirelessly every day to protect our users’ accounts and data, and we’re always on the lookout for additional protections against emerging threats like this.”notably declared a spokesperson for the company to the Wall Street Journal. While waiting for a fix, avoid taking your phone out in public as much as possible.
