Be careful, Cuban, if you want to become a Spanish citizen you have to know that until now there is a deadline for you to be able to access this possibility through the so-called “Grandchildren Law”. It is still not extended, so 2024 continues to be the year of completion.

The “Democratic Memory Law”, also known as the “Grandchildren Law”, allows descendants of Spaniards in Latin America to obtain Spanish citizenship, thus facilitating a possible emigration to Spain with all the papers in order.

This law, which was approved in 2022, aims to repair the damage caused to the victims of the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent military regime of Francisco Franco.

It is similar to the Historical Memory Law of 2007, enacted during the government of former socialist president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, although the latter only benefited the grandchildren of Spaniards.

In addition, the “Grandchildren Law” allows obtaining a passport for the children of Spanish women who married foreigners during the validity of the 1978 Constitution, which established that citizenship was inherited from the father.

Grandchildren Law Deadline

This weekend, some media outlets warned that without an extension so far there is a deadline to access the aforementioned Grandchildren Law.

Until last year, 60,000 people have obtained their European passport thanks to this measure, but this process will end in 2024.

The regulations, which were established in October 2022, establish that the deadline for applications will end on October 31, 2024. Although an extension is expected until 2025, this has not yet been announced by the government, so this date is the most important to take into account right now.

People who fall into any of the categories and are interested in obtaining Spanish citizenship must submit their application to the Spanish Consulate that corresponds to their place of residence.
