“Attempted Aircraft Hijack and Treason by Ukrainian Military: Latest Updates and Analysis”

The Security Service of Ukraine suspects some military men of treason (part 2 of article 111) and exceeding due authority (part 5 of article 426-1) because of an attempt on July 23, 2022 to hijack an aircraft of the Russian aerospace forces. Unauthorized actions of the military, according to the SBU, led to the shelling of the Kanatovo airfield in the Kirovograd region of Ukraine.

According to the intelligence service, some Ukrainian servicemen (their names and number are not specified) decided to conduct a “special operation” to seize the aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, whose pilot “allegedly agreed to go over to the side of Ukraine.” The actions were not coordinated with the command, and the operation was carried out “contrary to the comments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” according to a press release from the SBU.

As a result, according to the special service, the Russian side received information regarding the deployment of the personnel of the air forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and their aircraft. The special service reports that as a result of the shelling of the Kanatovo airfield, the commander of the military unit was killed, 17 Ukrainian servicemen were injured, two combat fighters were destroyed, and the building and the runway were damaged.

The attempted hijacking of a Russian Su-34 aircraft was reported by the FSB on July 25, 2022 (the date of the incident was not specified). The Russian intelligence service claimed to have “discovered and stopped” the operation of the main intelligence department of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, which was “supervised by NATO intelligence services” with the support of British forces.

The report said that Ukrainian intelligence officers “tried to recruit” Russian military pilots, and following completing the assignment, the pilot and his family planned to poison him with clonidine. It was alleged that the names of the organizers were established, but they were not named. At the same time, the FSB added that Ukrainian intelligence had revealed the layout of its air defense systems and airfields.

Ukrayinska Pravda reported on April 20 that the operation to “recruit” a Russian pilot lasted from April to June 2022. The organizers allegedly included a civilian IT specialist, employees of the SBU and the Air Force, as well as Roman Chervinsky, a reserve colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (only his name is known to the newspaper).

According to the publication, the Russian pilot, for a monetary reward, agreed to “simulate an accident” in front of “Russian dispatchers”, “at the agreed time” to overtake the plane to the airfield in Kanatovo. After that, the newspaper writes, the conspirators were supposed to announce that the pilot was taken prisoner, and the Russian and his family would receive new documents. However, the pilot did not arrive at the appointed time, and the airfield was “fired with Russian missiles.” According to the publication, it was not the pilot who communicated with the conspirators, but the Russian special services, who found out secret information.
