[Field photo report]Attacks on Kherson continue despite flood damage caused by dam destruction

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, I have been covering Ukraine and neighboring countries. Currently, I am continuing my coverage in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine, where flooding occurred due to the destruction of the dam, but at around 13:00 on June 16 (local time), there were several Russian artillery bombardments in the residential area of Kherson. It landed in place. It was just a block away from where I was. I’ll tell you what happened there with pictures. (All photos taken by the author)

Explosions sound as the lunch menu is opened

The shelling reportedly landed in several places in the city, injuring six people. Kherson is suffering from flood damage due to the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam, but even so, the artillery shelling continues.

I had just met up at a restaurant in the city for lunch with a friend of mine, a Japanese journalist who has been covering the area for a long time. When I sat down at the table and looked at the menu, I heard a low “Dogan” sound followed by a “whooshing” sound, followed by a loud rumbling sound.

On the ground, both Russian and Ukrainian forces are attacking each other. When I first came to Ukraine in April 2022, a Ukrainian soldier I met taught me how to tell who was firing at which. It is very important for our own protection.

If there is a low whooshing sound followed by a whoosh that cuts through the wind, there is a possibility that the missile being launched is heading towards us (it is an attack by the Russian side) and will land nearby. It is said that it is better to think and act. On the other hand, if there was a loud, low-pitched bang followed by nothing, there was a high possibility of an attack from the Ukrainian side.

This time, “Dogan” was followed by “Shuu”, and there was a big rumbling of the ground, so I immediately realized that a shell had fallen nearby. Sure enough, several passers-by rushed into the store.

I immediately closed the menu and headed to the scene with my camera in hand. It was so loud that I thought it had landed near me, but it was only a block away from the restaurant.
