Two Russian rebel groups based in Ukraine, the Legion for the Freedom of Russia and the Order of Siberia, announced that they carried out attacks on Russia’s western border on March 12, 2024.
The Legion for its Freedom of Russia and the Order of Siberia announced on their Telegram pages that they launched attacks in Russia from Ukraine.
“We will take our land from the regime centimeter by centimeter,” the Legion for the Freedom of Russia said in the Telegram post. Reuters was unable to cross-reference these reports independently.
Russian officials were not immediately available for comment today.
In the past, Russian officials have described the groups as puppets of the Ukrainian military and the US CIA, while Moscow says they are trying to cause chaos in Russia.
Andrii Yusov, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence service, told the Ukrainian network 24 Channel that the groups are conducting the operation on Russian territory independently of Ukraine.
Yusov said a third group, the Russian Volunteer Corps, was also involved in the operation.
According to newsbeast, the legion’s post appeared to refer to the upcoming elections in Russia, which will take place this weekend.
“People will vote for whoever they want, not whoever they are forced to vote for. The Russians will live freely,” the organization said, as reported by the Athens News Agency, citing Reuters.
The Legion for the Freedom of Russia and the Russian Volunteer Corps have previously claimed responsibility for other cross-border raids into Russia from Ukraine.
