The shooter was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, NBC and CBS reported on Sunday, citing the FBI. He was a registered member of Trump’s Republican Party.

Trump said he had been injured in the ear by the shots. According to authorities, in addition to the suspected shooter, a bystander was also killed and two others were seriously injured. Trump has since landed in New Jersey near New York. His campaign team published a video on X showing him leaving his plane.

The attack occurred as Trump was just beginning his speech at the campaign rally in the small town of Butler in Pennsylvania. After the shots were fired, Secret Service officers pulled the former president to the ground and eventually brought him to safety.
According to the Secret Service, the attacker fired several shots “from an elevated position” outside the meeting place. The shooter was then “neutralized.”

The Pennsylvania police say the priority is to determine the perpetrator’s motive. It must also be quickly determined whether there were other people involved. The investigation might take days, weeks or months.
